Ayatul Kursi — a single verse from Surah Al-Baqarah (2:255) — is the most frequently cited verse in the entire hadith literature on the benefits of specific Quranic passages. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) called it the greatest verse in the Quran. He described its recitation as a protection from Shaytan, a gate to Paradise, and a shield for the night. If you are looking for a single verse to memorize and recite daily, Ayatul Kursi is the starting point.

The Text of Ayatul Kursi

Transliteration: Allahu la ilaha illa Huwal-Hayyul-Qayyum. La ta’khudhuhu sinatun wa la nawm. Lahu ma fis-samawati wa ma fil-ard. Man dhal-ladhi yashfa’u ‘indahu illa bi-idhnih. Ya’lamu ma bayna aydihim wa ma khalfahum. Wa la yuhituna bi-shay’in min ‘ilmihi illa bima sha’. Wasi’a kursiyyuhus-samawati wal-ard. Wa la ya’uduhu hifdhuhuma. Wa Huwal-‘Aliyyul-‘Adheem.

Translation: “Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.” (2:255)

Why This Verse Is the Greatest

The Prophet (peace be upon him) directly stated the rank of this verse. When he asked Ubayy ibn Ka’b (may Allah be pleased with him) which verse of the Quran is the greatest, Ubayy replied: “Allahu la ilaha illa Huwal-Hayyul-Qayyum.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) struck him on the chest and said: “Rejoice in your knowledge, O Abu al-Mundhir! By the One in whose hand is my soul, it has a tongue and two lips, and glorifies the King at the foot of the Throne.” (Muslim)

This is not a matter of personal opinion — the Prophet explicitly confirmed it. Ayatul Kursi is the single greatest verse in the Quran.

10 Benefits of Ayatul Kursi from the Quran and Sunnah

1. Protection from Shaytan All Night

“Whoever recites Ayatul Kursi before sleeping — Allah appoints a guardian over him and no devil will come near him until morning.” (Bukhari)

This is the most widely known benefit, and it is narrated in Bukhari — the most rigorously authenticated hadith collection. The protection is not partial or conditional. No devil comes near the person who recites it before sleep. This protection lasts from recitation until morning.

2. The Remarkable Story of Abu Hurairah

The context of the above narration is itself a lesson. Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) was appointed to guard the zakat (charity collection) for Ramadan. A man came three nights in a row and tried to steal from it. Each time Abu Hurairah caught him, and each time the man said: “Let me go and I will teach you something that will benefit you.” On the third night, the man taught him Ayatul Kursi, saying: “Recite it before sleeping and Allah will appoint a guardian over you — no devil will come near you until morning.”

When Abu Hurairah reported this to the Prophet (peace be upon him), he confirmed: “He told you the truth, although he is a liar. That was Shaytan.” The one teaching the protection from Shaytan was Shaytan himself — a detail that underlines how real and powerful this protection is.

3. Entry to Paradise After Each Prayer

“Whoever recites Ayatul Kursi after every obligatory prayer, nothing prevents him from entering Paradise except death.” (Nasa’i, Ibn Hibban — graded sahih by Al-Albani)

This is one of the most remarkable benefits in the hadith literature. The only barrier between a person who consistently recites Ayatul Kursi after every salah and Paradise is the moment of death itself. The implications of this for building a consistent post-salah practice cannot be overstated.

4. Protection Upon Leaving Home

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “When you leave your house, recite Ayatul Kursi, and you will be shielded by the protection of Allah until you return.” (Tabarani — with corroborating narrations)

Starting your day — every time you step out — with this verse is a practice of placing yourself consciously under divine protection. This connects leaving home to an act of trust in Allah rather than relying on the illusion of your own ability to protect yourself.

5. The Greatest Name of Allah May Be Within It

Some scholars, including Imam Al-Qurtubi, noted narrations suggesting that the greatest name of Allah (Ism al-A’dham — the name that, when called upon, Allah answers) may be contained within Ayatul Kursi, along with the opening of Surah Al-Baqarah and Surah Al-Imran. This is based on the hadith: “Search for the greatest name of Allah in these three surahs.” (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi)

6. It Contains the Purest Description of Tawheed

Of the many benefits scholars note about Ayatul Kursi, this may be the most profound for the believer’s daily life: the verse is a complete, compressed theological statement about who Allah is. Every phrase dismantles a false conception of God:

  • “La ilaha illa Hu” — removes all partners
  • “Al-Hayyul-Qayyum” — He is alive and self-subsisting, unlike any created thing
  • “La ta’khudhuhu sinatun wa la nawm” — He never sleeps or dozes; He is always present
  • “Lahu ma fis-samawati wal-ard” — absolute ownership of all creation
  • “La yuhituna bi-shay’in min ‘ilmihi” — His knowledge is infinite; ours is given by Him
  • “Wasi’a kursiyyuhus-samawat” — His dominion and knowledge encompasses the heavens and earth

Memorizing and reflecting on Ayatul Kursi is an act of aqeedah (Islamic theology) as much as it is worship.

7. Protection for Your Household

Several scholars note that reciting Ayatul Kursi upon entering the home, along with the basmalah and the opening verses of Surah Al-Baqarah and its last two verses, creates a comprehensive protection for the household. The narration states that Shaytan does not enter a house in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited. (Muslim)

8. A Companion in the Grave

Related narrations from the companions describe the Quran as a companion and intercessor in the grave. Specifically, consistent recitation of Ayatul Kursi — particularly as part of the bedtime routine — is described as bringing the believer company and light in the grave.

9. A Barrier Between You and Hell

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever recites Ayatul Kursi after every obligatory prayer is under the protection of Allah until the next prayer.” (Tabarani) There is no gap in protection for the one who maintains this practice — each prayer covers the time until the next.

10. It Takes Less Than 30 Seconds

This is not from a hadith — it is practical wisdom. Ayatul Kursi can be recited in under 30 seconds once memorized. The barrier to gaining all of the above benefits is genuinely small: one verse, five times a day after prayer, and once before sleep. The Prophet (peace be upon him) loved practices that were consistent, even if small. This qualifies entirely.

How to Build the Habit of Reciting Ayatul Kursi

After Every Prayer: The Non-Negotiable

The most transformative habit, based on the hadith about Paradise, is reciting Ayatul Kursi after every obligatory prayer without exception. Place it in your post-salah adhkar routine:

  1. Say the tasleem
  2. Say Astaghfirullah three times
  3. Say the short post-salah duas
  4. Recite Ayatul Kursi

This takes about 90 seconds total and provides protection until your next prayer.

Before Sleep: The Nightly Shield

Place Ayatul Kursi near the beginning of your bedtime adhkar, before or after the Three Quls and before Surah Al-Mulk. It functions as a specific nighttime protection that complements — not replaces — the other bedtime practices.

Memorize It This Week

If you have not yet memorized Ayatul Kursi, there is no better week to start. The verse is long but rhythmic. The structure that makes it theologically dense also makes it easier to memorize than it looks. Most people can memorize it in 3–5 days of intentional practice.

Method:

  • Break it into four segments: through “wa la nawm”, through “illa bi-idhnih”, through “illa bima sha’”, then the final two phrases
  • Drill each segment separately before combining
  • Use it in every prayer until it is solid

What You Are Actually Saying

The most important thing about Ayatul Kursi is not the protection it provides but the truth it contains. Every time you recite it, you are affirming:

  • That there is no god but Allah
  • That He is alive and never sleeps
  • That He owns everything
  • That nothing happens without His permission
  • That His knowledge is infinite
  • That His dominion covers everything that exists
  • That guarding all of creation does not tire Him

This is not a magical incantation. It is a statement of reality — one that, recited consistently, reshapes how you see the world.

The Nafs community uses Ayatul Kursi as one of its foundational daily practices — it appears in the morning adhkar, the bedtime routine, and the post-salah checklist. Consistency over time is where the transformation happens.

May Allah make Ayatul Kursi a companion on our tongues, a light in our hearts, and a shield in our lives.
