The Sunnah of Travel Dua

Travel in Islam is not a secular act. Every journey — whether a flight across the world or a daily commute — carries spiritual weight. The Prophet (peace be upon him) had specific supplications for mounting a vehicle, for the road, for making camp, and for returning home. These weren’t religious formalities. They were genuine acknowledgments that your safety on any road belongs entirely to Allah.

The comprehensive duas below cover every stage of travel. Learn them, save them, and return to them every time you leave home.

The Great Travel Dua: For When You Board Any Vehicle

This is the most well-known and frequently recited travel dua, directly from the Quran. It is authentically reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) would recite this when mounting any mode of transport:

Transliteration: Subhana-lladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrineen, wa inna ila Rabbina lamunqaliboon.

Translation: “Glory be to the One who has subjected this to us, and we could not have subdued it ourselves. And indeed, to our Lord we will return.” (Quran 43:13-14)

Then add:

Transliteration: Allahumma inna nas’aluka fi safarina hadha al-birra wat-taqwa, wa minal-‘amali ma tarda.

Translation: “O Allah, we ask You on this journey of ours for righteousness and piety, and for deeds that are pleasing to You.”

Why this dua matters: The Quranic portion acknowledges that the vehicle — whether a plane, car, or horse — was made submissive to you by Allah alone. You are not simply a passenger; you are a traveler under His care.

The Full Travel Dua: Complete Version from Sunan Abi Dawud

Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that when the Prophet (peace be upon him) mounted his camel for a journey, he would say Allahu Akbar three times, then recite the Quranic verse above, and then add the following:

Transliteration: Allahumma inni as’aluka fi safari hadha al-birra wat-taqwa, wa minal-‘amali ma tarda. Allahumma hawwin ‘alayna safarana hadha watwi ‘anna bu’dahu. Allahumma anta as-sahibu fis-safari, wal-khalifatu fil-ahl.

Translation: “O Allah, I ask You on this journey for righteousness and piety, and for deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and shorten its distance. O Allah, You are the Companion in travel and the Guardian of the family.”

Then for returning home, add:

Transliteration: Ayibuna, ta’ibuna, ‘abiduna, li-Rabbina hamidun.

Translation: “We are those who return, who repent, who worship, and who praise our Lord.”

This final phrase transforms the homecoming itself into an act of worship.

Dua When Leaving Home

Before you even reach your vehicle, the Prophet (peace be upon him) taught us a protection to say as we step out the door:

Translation: “In the name of Allah. I place my trust in Allah. There is no power and no strength except through Allah.”

Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi narrate that when a person says this upon leaving home, an angel says to them: “You have been guided, you have been sufficed, and you have been protected.” Shaytan turns away, unable to cause harm.

Dua When Stopping for Rest During Travel

When the Prophet (peace be upon him) stopped anywhere on a journey, he would say:

Transliteration: A’udhu bi kalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq.

Translation: “I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever stops at a resting place and says this will not be harmed by anything until he moves on.” (Muslim)

This dua is not reserved for camping in the wilderness. It applies to any place you stop — a hotel room, an airport terminal, any unfamiliar space.

Dua When Entering a Town or City

When arriving at any new place, the Prophet (peace be upon him) would say:

Transliteration: Allahumma Rabbas-samawatis-sab’i wa ma azlalna, wa Rabbal-aradinas-sab’i wa ma aqtalna, wa Rabbash-shayatini wa ma adlalna, wa Rabbar-riyahi wa ma dharayna, as’aluka khayra hadhihi al-qaryah wa khayra ahlaha.

Translation: “O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and all they shade, Lord of the seven earths and all they contain, Lord of the devils and those they lead astray, Lord of the winds and what they scatter — I ask You for the good of this town and the good of its people.”

Dua When Returning Home

When the Prophet (peace be upon him) returned from a journey, he would say Allahu Akbar three times on the road, then recite:

Transliteration: Ayibuna, ta’ibuna, ‘abiduna, li-Rabbina hamidun. Sadaqa-llahu wa’dahu, wa nasara ‘abdahu, wa hazamal-ahzaba wahdah.

Translation: “We return, we repent, we worship, we praise our Lord. Allah fulfilled His promise, gave victory to His servant, and defeated the confederates alone.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him) would repeat this three times. Coming home is not simply a physical return — it is a spiritual reckoning that the journey is now behind you and Allah sustained you through it.

Dua for the Traveler You Are Leaving Behind

When someone leaves on a journey, those staying behind can send them off with this supplication — and travelers can ask for it before they go:

Transliteration: Astawdi’uka-llaha-lladhi la tadi’u wada’i’uh.

Translation: “I entrust you to Allah, whose trusts are never lost.”

This is the dua the Prophet (peace be upon him) said to those departing on journeys. To say this for your children, your spouse, your parents as they travel is to formally place them under Allah’s protection.

Travel as Worship: The Islamic View of Journey

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Travel is a portion of punishment — it cuts short one’s sleep, food, and drink. So when you have accomplished your purpose, you should quickly return to your family.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

Travel, in this view, is not a vacation from spiritual life. It is a test of character, patience, and trust in Allah. The duas above are not magic — they are the acknowledgment that you are never outside Allah’s sight or care, regardless of how many miles from home you find yourself.

If you’re prone to checking your phone constantly during travel — scrolling through social media in airports, losing Fajr to jet lag — consider that travel is already shortening your ibadah. Apps like Nafs can help you maintain your worship streak and screen-time balance even when your routine is disrupted.
