Yes, watching porn is haram in Islam. The Quran commands believing men and women to lower their gaze and guard their chastity (Quran 24:30–31), and the Prophet ﷺ described the lustful look as the zina of the eyes (Sahih Muslim 2657). Scholars treat deliberately watching pornography as prohibited, whether it is on a screen or not. An accidental glance that you turn away from is not held against you; choosing to keep looking is. And no amount of it is beyond Allah’s forgiveness if you repent.

Nafs does not issue fatwas. The rulings below are summarised from the scholars and fatwa bodies linked, so you can read them yourself.

Knowing the ruling is the first step; closing the route is the next. Use Nafs to block adult sites and the apps that start the loop, and keep device-level filtering and accountability in place for wider protection.

The evidence

Lowering the gaze

Allah tells believing men to lower their gaze and guard their private parts, and says this is purer for them. The next verse gives believing women the same command (Quran 24:30–31). The order matters: the gaze comes before chastity, because what you look at shapes what you go on to do.

The Quran also tells believers not to come near zina (Quran 17:32), not only to avoid the act itself, and reminds us that hearing, sight and the heart will all be questioned (Quran 17:36).

The zina of the eyes

The Prophet ﷺ said that each part of the body has its share of zina: for the eyes it is looking, for the tongue it is speech, and the self wishes and desires, while the private parts confirm it or deny it (Sahih al-Bukhari 6243; Sahih Muslim 2657). Pornography is that looking, chosen on purpose and repeated.

Yaqeen Institute’s essay on prophetic solutions to pornography (Dr. Jibran Khokhar, 2026) reads this hadith as describing a process. The final click is the end of a path that starts with attention, curiosity, boredom or loneliness, and each stage is a place to stop.

What scholars say

  • IslamQA states that watching pornographic websites is haram and calls it “a disease, not a remedy” (IslamQA 166123).
  • SeekersGuidance states that viewing pornography is unanimously prohibited in the relied-upon positions of the Hanafi and Shafi’i schools, and that seeing it through a screen does not change the ruling (SeekersGuidance, 2022).
  • Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta states that it is prohibited to watch pornographic films (Dar al-Ifta).
  • Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, writing for AboutIslam, says Islam prohibits viewing sexual acts, whether nude or clothed (AboutIslam, 2026).

Accidental versus deliberate viewing

Islam distinguishes between a glance you did not choose and a look you keep.

  • The sudden glance. Jarir asked the Prophet ﷺ about an unintended glance, and he told him to turn his eyes away (Sahih Muslim 2159).
  • The second look. The Prophet ﷺ told Ali not to follow one glance with another: the first is excused, the second is not (Sunan Abi Dawud 2149; Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 2777).

AboutIslam puts it the same way: an accidental glance is forgiven if you turn away immediately, while deliberate or continued viewing is not excused. Opening a page “just to check”, searching for a thumbnail you saw, or letting a feed keep playing is a choice, not an accident.

If something explicit appeared in front of you unexpectedly, close it and move on. The calm, practical steps are in what to do after accidentally seeing explicit content.

How to repent from watching porn

Repentance has three parts that scholars describe consistently: stop the sin, regret it sincerely, and resolve not to return. For a habit that lives on a phone, add a fourth: close the route you used.

You can ask Allah for protection in the words the Prophet ﷺ taught Shakal ibn Humayd (Sunan Abi Dawud 1551):

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ سَمْعِي، وَمِنْ شَرِّ بَصَرِي، وَمِنْ شَرِّ لِسَانِي، وَمِنْ شَرِّ قَلْبِي، وَمِنْ شَرِّ مَنِيِّي

Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min sharri sam’i, wa min sharri basari, wa min sharri lisani, wa min sharri qalbi, wa min sharri maniyyi.

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, the evil of my sight, the evil of my tongue, the evil of my heart, and the evil of my semen (that is, my sexual desire).

More duas for the moment of temptation are in dua to stop watching haram.

Do not let guilt become a reason to keep going. Allah tells those who have wronged themselves not to despair of His mercy (Quran 39:53), and promises that He will replace the bad deeds of those who repent, believe and do good with good deeds (Quran 25:70).

A way out, in five steps

  1. Close it now. Not after this video, not after this page.
  2. Make tawbah, and make wudu or ghusl as your situation requires. If masturbation was part of it, see what to do after masturbation.
  3. Block the first step, not only the last. The route usually starts with a feed, a search app or a second browser. Block that app and turn on adult-site protection.
  4. Change the place and the hour. No phone in bed or in the bathroom. Charge it in a shared room overnight.
  5. Tell one trusted person that you are changing your phone boundaries, and get professional help if it is harming your marriage, work, sleep or salah.

How Nafs helps

  • Adult-site protection. On Android, Guard can identify and block known adult domains in supported browsers when the Accessibility permission and protection are enabled. On iPhone, Nafs enables Apple’s adult-content filter for Safari and in-app WebKit on iOS 16 or later with the required Screen Time access. Coverage depends on the browser and device; it does not filter every in-app feed, browser or other device.
  • Block the apps that start the loop (iPhone and Android). Choose them in the Fortress tab. On iPhone, app blocking requires iOS 16 or later.
  • “I have an urge” (iPhone and Android). On the Today screen or in the Fortress tab, it opens a calm screen that breathes with you, shows the intention you wrote, and gives you a dua to say.
  • Short courses and earned time. Three 14-lesson courses help you understand the urge, and Quran and dhikr earn back screen time for the ordinary apps you allow. Adult content is never something you unlock.
  • Iron Intention (Pro). Turning off your guard needs a 24-hour cooling-off.
  • Prayer-time lock (Android only). Your locked apps pause for 15 minutes at each prayer, until you log it.

A removable blocker can be bypassed, and Nafs is not treatment. It is free to download with optional in-app purchases; see how Nafs works for Muslims quitting porn.

Frequently asked questions

Is watching porn a major sin?

Scholars classify sins in different ways, so ask a scholar if you need a precise category. What the sources agree on is that deliberately watching pornography is prohibited, is a step toward zina that the Quran warns against, and needs sincere repentance.

Will Allah forgive me for watching porn?

Yes, if you repent sincerely. In a hadith qudsi, a servant sins and asks forgiveness, falls again and asks again, and each time Allah forgives him because he knows he has a Lord who forgives (Sahih al-Bukhari 7507). The way back stays open as long as you keep returning.

Is it haram to watch porn if I do not masturbate?

Yes. Watching is prohibited in itself, because of the command to lower the gaze. Masturbation is a separate question with its own ruling, covered in is masturbation haram. Some readers use “PMO” for the two together; the PMO plan deals with that combined cycle.

Is it haram to watch porn with my spouse?

Yes. Marriage makes your spouse lawful to you; it does not make it lawful to look at other people’s nakedness. SeekersGuidance, for example, describes looking at a non-relative’s nakedness as prohibited, and the people on screen are strangers whether you watch alone or together.

Does watching porn break my fast?

Watching is a sin that harms the fast even when it does not break it: the Prophet ﷺ said that Allah has no need of the fast of someone who does not give up false speech and wrong actions (Sahih al-Bukhari 1903). Deliberate emission during the day breaks the fast and has to be made up. The details by school are in does masturbation break your fast.

Put a barrier between the urge and the next tap.

Use Nafs to block selected trigger apps and redirect the interruption into Quran, dhikr, dua, or salah. Pair it with device-level filtering and accountability for broader adult-content protection.
