If you have just slipped, you do not need to punish yourself or give up on the rest of the day. Islam gives you a clear way back. In order:
- Stop now and close whatever was open.
- Make ghusl if sexual fluid was emitted with desire. If it was not, ghusl is not required for this; wash and make wudu.
- Pray your next prayer on time.
- Make tawbah privately: regret it, ask Allah’s forgiveness, and intend not to return.
- Change one thing before tonight so the same route is harder next time.
The rest of this page explains each step with its sources, then gives you a plan for the next 24 hours, which is when a slip most often turns into a cycle.
Want the same route to be harder tonight? Block the trigger app with Nafs now, and keep device-level adult-content filtering and accountability in place for broader protection.
The first five minutes
Shame tends to push you back to the phone, to another feed, or to hiding. Do the opposite:
- Close the content. Do not go back to “check” anything.
- Put the phone down in another room, or at least out of reach.
- Get up and leave the private place.
- Say Astaghfirullah wa atubu ilayh (I seek Allah’s forgiveness and turn to Him in repentance).
You do not need to feel better before you take the next step. The next step is part of returning.
When is ghusl required?
If semen (maniy) is emitted with desire, ghusl is required, according to scholarly consensus. IslamQA states this and cites al-Nawawi’s al-Majmu’ and Ibn Qudamah’s al-Mughni (IslamQA 47693). The Quran says that if you are in a state of major impurity (janabah), you must purify yourselves (Quran 5:6).
The same applies to women. When Umm Sulaym asked whether a woman must bathe after a discharge in a dream, the Prophet ﷺ said yes, if she sees the fluid (Sahih al-Bukhari 282). IslamQA explains how women can tell the fluids apart in when ghusl is required for a woman.
If nothing was emitted, ghusl is not required for this. Pre-seminal fluid (madhy) only requires washing the private part and making wudu. The Prophet ﷺ gave this ruling when Ali had another man ask him about it on his behalf (Sahih al-Bukhari 269). “Nothing came out” is not a loophole, though; the act itself still needs tawbah. The ruling on the act is covered in is masturbation haram.
The schools differ on some edge cases, such as fluid emitted without desire. If you are unsure which applies to you, ask a scholar; you do not need to describe anything explicit.
How to make ghusl
The essential part of ghusl is the intention and making sure water reaches the whole body. The Sunnah way adds washing the private parts, making wudu, then pouring water over the head and the rest of the body. The schools differ on whether rinsing the mouth and nose is obligatory, so follow your school. Step-by-step instructions are in the ghusl guide.
If it happened at night
You may sleep before ghusl. When Umar asked whether one of them could sleep while in janabah, the Prophet ﷺ said yes, if he makes wudu (Sahih al-Bukhari 287). Make ghusl in time to pray Fajr. Set an alarm if you need to.
Can I pray after masturbation?
Yes. Once you have made ghusl, pray as you normally would. A sin does not cancel your obligation to pray or make you unfit to stand before Allah.
Prayer is part of how sins are wiped away. A man who had kissed a woman came to the Prophet ﷺ, and Allah revealed that prayer at the ends of the day and in the night removes misdeeds (Quran 11:114; Sahih al-Bukhari 526). The Prophet ﷺ said this was for all of his community.
Three practical points:
- Do not delay the prayer out of shame. If delaying ghusl makes a prayer time pass, that prayer must still be made up.
- A prayer made without the required ghusl is not valid. If you prayed before realising ghusl was due, make ghusl and repeat that prayer.
- Tayammum (dry purification) is for when water is unavailable or would harm you (Quran 5:6), not for embarrassment.
Dhikr and dua are open to you straight away. Most schools say to wait until after ghusl before reciting Quran or touching the mushaf, so ask a scholar if you are unsure.
What about fasting?
Being in janabah does not stop you from starting a fast. The Prophet ﷺ sometimes woke at Fajr in janabah, made ghusl and fasted (Sahih al-Bukhari 1926). During the day, deliberate emission breaks the fast. The details, including make-up days and expiation, are in does masturbation break your fast.
Tawbah: returning to Allah in private
Scholars describe sincere repentance as stopping the sin, regretting it, and resolving not to return. It does not require a confession to anyone.
Keep it between you and Allah. The Prophet ﷺ warned against people who sin at night under Allah’s cover and then expose it themselves in the morning (Sahih al-Bukhari 6069). Asking a trusted person for help with your phone or your habits is different from announcing a sin.
You can use the supplication the Prophet ﷺ called the best way of seeking forgiveness, Sayyid al-Istighfar (Sahih al-Bukhari 6306):
O Allah, You are my Lord; there is no god but You. You created me and I am Your servant. I keep Your covenant and promise as far as I can. I seek refuge in You from the harm of what I have done. I acknowledge Your blessings on me, and I admit my sin, so forgive me, for no one forgives sins except You.
After making wudu or ghusl, you can also pray two rak’ahs and ask forgiveness. Abu Bakr reported that the Prophet ﷺ said Allah forgives a person who sins, purifies himself, prays and then asks His forgiveness (Sunan Abi Dawud 1521).
Then follow the bad deed with a good one. The Prophet ﷺ said a good deed after a bad one wipes it out (Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 1987). Read a page of Quran after ghusl, give a small charity, or help someone at home.
If you slip again later, return again. Allah tells those who have wronged themselves not to despair of His mercy (Quran 39:53). For more words to say, see duas for forgiveness.
The next 24 hours
A slip often has a “second wave”: guilt leads to isolation, isolation to scrolling, and scrolling back to the same place. Plan for that window now.
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Now | Ghusl or wudu, the next prayer, tawbah, and one written line: the time, the place, and the first app you opened. Keep it short and non-explicit. |
| The next hour | Stay out of the private place. Eat, walk, call someone, or do a task with other people around. |
| If the urge comes back | Do not negotiate with it. In Nafs, tap “I have an urge”, breathe with the screen, read your intention and say the dua. Then stand up and leave the room. |
| Tonight | Charge the phone outside the bedroom. Block the app you wrote down. Pray Isha and go to sleep with wudu. |
| Tomorrow morning | Pray Fajr on time. Read your one line from yesterday and close one more part of that route. |
Nothing in this plan requires a perfect mood. It requires a few decisions made before the next weak moment.
Set up Nafs so the urge button and app block are ready tonight.
How Nafs fits into those 24 hours
- “I have an urge” (iPhone and Android). On the Today screen or in the Fortress tab. It opens a calm screen that breathes with you, shows the intention you wrote in your own words, and gives you a dua to say.
- Block the app you wrote down (iPhone and Android). Choose it in the Fortress tab. On iPhone, app blocking uses Screen Time and requires iOS 16 or later.
- Adult-site protection. On Android, Guard can identify and block known adult domains in supported browsers when the Accessibility permission and protection are enabled. On iPhone, Nafs enables Apple’s adult-content filter for Safari and in-app WebKit on iOS 16 or later with the required Screen Time access. Coverage depends on the browser and device, so check it on your phone.
- Short courses (iPhone and Android). Three courses of 14 lessons each, a few minutes a day, with the first lessons of every course free.
- Earn time back with worship. Quran and dhikr earn back screen time for the ordinary apps you choose to allow. Adult content is never something you unlock.
- Iron Intention (Pro). Turning off your guard needs a 24-hour cooling-off, so a decision made in a weak moment does not take effect straight away.
- Prayer-time lock (Android only). Your locked apps pause for 15 minutes at each prayer, until you log it.
Nafs is a phone tool, not treatment, and no app guarantees a result. Nafs is free to download with optional in-app purchases; see how Nafs works for Muslims quitting porn.
If it keeps happening
One slip is a moment. A repeated cycle needs a plan. Some readers call the porn-masturbation-orgasm loop “PMO”; the practical plan to stop masturbation and quit PMO covers trigger mapping, relapse review and support. For an urge that is happening right now, use the 10-minute urge plan.
If the behaviour feels outside your control or is harming your sleep, work, studies, marriage or worship, speak to a licensed counsellor or therapist as well as a trusted imam. If you feel unable to keep yourself safe, contact local emergency or crisis services now.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to make ghusl if nothing came out?
No ghusl is required for this if no semen was emitted. If pre-seminal fluid came out, wash it and make wudu (Sahih al-Bukhari 269). You still need to make tawbah for the act.
Can I sleep before making ghusl?
Yes, after making wudu (Sahih al-Bukhari 287). Make ghusl in time for Fajr.
I prayed without making ghusl. Is my prayer valid?
A prayer made while ghusl was due is not valid. Make ghusl and repeat it. If you are unsure whether ghusl was due, ask a scholar.
Is a wet dream a sin?
No. A wet dream happens without your choice, so there is no sin in it. If you see fluid when you wake, ghusl is required (Sahih al-Bukhari 282).
Do I need to tell anyone what I did?
No. Repentance is between you and Allah, and you should not expose a sin Allah has covered (Sahih al-Bukhari 6069). Asking a trusted person, imam or counsellor for help is different, and you only need to share what is necessary.
